Your mission: Become the Boss of AI
AI is already in the mainstream of business solutions. What should you be doing to prepare yourself? Go back for a PhD? Nope. Learn to code in python? Wrong again.
Think of machine learning and AI like a great big toolkit. These are not just screwdrivers and hammers. These are power tools. You don’t need to learn to build a powertool, you need to learn how to use it properly. Your job, as a human, is more straightforward than you might think. For most with AI, we need to:
- Understand how the tools can be used
- Test and evaluate the results
- Communicate the results
Machine learning and AI are not a button we push to magically get a result. We need to test and learn and continue to iterate our solution.
Here are some simple (and fun!) things you can do to get up to speed with AI:
- Experiment with AI tools!
It doesn’t need to be work-related. Use GenAI to create your family Christmas card photo or use GenAi to create a fun video about your kid’s school play. Here are some tools you can play with:
- If you haven’t already, start asking an LLM (large language model) all of your questions about work, life and the universe, start with https://chat.openai.com/ You haven’t already started experimenting, what are you waiting for? You can experiment with other solutions, such as https://www.perplexity.ai/ Put the ChatGPT app on your phone so that you can start asking questions of ChatGPT rather than Google, in order to learn how it works. Both ChatGPT and Perplexity are available on your web browser and mobile phone apps.
- Create photos with https://www.midjourney.com/ Have fun with it!
- Create videos with https://www.veed.io/ Make your family holiday video! Make a fun video about your work team!

What skills do you need as the human who is evaluating and using AI?
Now You’re Ready to Ring in the New Year!
A few specific skills where you can focus:
- AI Awareness Sparks Imagination about Use Cases. Understand how the tools are used. What are the use cases? What are the benefits? What’s required to implement them?
- Experimental Design Generates a Data-Driven Evaluation. Innovation requires a ‘test-and-learn’ mindset. Typically, we would start out with a test or POC, using a small group of accounts. The experiment should be designed well, articulating the hypothesis and evaluation metrics. With each test, we learn what works and what doesn’t.
- Data Storytelling Drives Your Business Case. As we expand our testing, there are more and more results to evaluate. Summarizing the impact of a test and articulating the resulting actionable insights will drive the next iteration and move us towards success.
So, don’t worry if you’re not a python coder. Anyone with a bit of curiosity can apply their existing business knowledge to the usage of these new tools!
